Color Trends come and go because we as a consumer crave change. I like to think of it as the 'Explorer' in us all is searching for something to satisfy our creative side. Most researchers agree that what's new in fashion and design this year is the color red. However, if you crave a neutral palette this fall, it's easy to achieve. Here are five things to consider when choosing your decor.
1.Embrace the Colors of Fall
There is something nostalgic about decorating for fall, just like other holidays. Many of us have memories of picking pumpkins and squash out of the garden and raking leaves into piles. Currently we are living in a world of neutrals, including our fall decor. But there is no other season that has the explosion of color like autumn. So, why not embrace the bounty of hues that fall has to offer? Which colors below are you drawn to?

Sherwin Williams predicts the red hues that will gain popularity this fall are Dahlia Red, Purple-Reds and Pinky-Reds. These colors are a little richer and deeper than what the fashion world is embracing. In small doses, these rich reds are a perfect addition to your porch or displays this fall.

2.Still Loving Neutrals? Consider Pastels
If you love the tranquility of neutrals and want to keep your fall decor simple and quiet, you can still incorporate the new color trends. The key is to keep all colors in a pastel or tint like the color of Chinchilla or Intuitive pictured above. Choose pale shades of green, orange or lavender. Pastels have just enough tint to add interest while still giving the neutral vibe.

3. Add Pops of Playfulness
You don't have to change all of your fall decor to embrace the new color trends. Adding one flower arrangement, or some brighter gourds and pumpkins to your neutral ones can make a room sing. Add a few plum or purple pumpkins to your porch or a vase of deep plum branches. Or find some beautiful red maple leaves in your neighborhood and display them in a vase. That is all it takes to embrace the color trends of fall..

4.The Palette of Autumn
Research is ongoing on how color affects moods, energy, efficiency and even IQ tests. So it is a benefit to know the properties of the colors you are using in your home.
Red- is a color of high energy. It evokes passion, love, strength, power and courage. It is best used sparingly as a pop of color instead of the main color in a display.
Orange- combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is vibrant and strong and highly visible like red. It is best to use muted colors of orange if you want to combine it with a pop of red.
Purple- reminds us of wealth and royalty. Lighter shades of purple sooth and calm us and are often used by beauty brands. Purple is gaining in popularity and a wonderful color to add to fall decor.
Green- brings a feeling of abundance and is associated with refreshment and peace, rest and security.
Yellow- evokes happiness, excitement, originality, enthusiasm, confidence, hope, and creativity. Used in pastel tones, it is a great color to combine with orange and pops of red in fall decor.

5. Use the 60 - 30 -10 Rule
The 60 - 30 - 10 rule can help when you are shopping, at the pumpkin patch or putting together a display. If you look closely at the natural centerpiece below you will see they used 60% green in the gourd, leaves and moss. The brown of the bowl, twigs and rattan ball make up about 30% of the display. This centerpiece would be flat and boring without the white pumpkins which make up about 10%. These are guidelines, so don't overthink it. Just keep in mind that 10% of the color should be a high contrast to the other colors. This rule can help when decorating an entire porch or just a fall arrangement.
