I have lived in six different states with six very different environments. Without fail, Labor Day was the time to decorate for fall, even when it was 109 degrees outside. There is something magical about cooling temperatures, changing colors and aromas of autumn.
The Palette of Autumn Hues
The name of the game for incorporating fall colors into your home is contrast.
If you have a neutral color scheme, adding more neutral colors may fall flat. However, adding even a little fiery red or rustic orange will add spice to your decor.
Mellow yellows and earthy browns are good for layering and infusing nature's touch.
Deep greens and moody purples can ground a room like black often does in design.
If you use the 60-30-10 rule, 60% of your added fall decor would be mellow yellows, earthy browns, or beige. 30% of the decor could be the dark moody colors of green or possibly purple. For that pop of interest, 10% could be fiery red or orange. Think about your color palette before heading to the store or Pumpkin Patch.

Layering Textures for Warmth
Summer is the time for minimalism. Once the temperatures cool we crave that cozy feel. Add plush throws, fuzzy blankets, and furry pillows to sofas and beds for texture and warmth. Roll out soft rugs and add floor pillows to create ambiance. Wooden accents, such as bowls and trays, and rustic finishes will give your space a natural feel.

Nature's Inspirations Inside
In almost every place I have lived, there have been branches, leaves, and pinecones to forage and bring indoors. Branches with leaves are perfect for filling vases and will last a long time if you change out the water regularly. Bowls full of pinecones or acorns add texture and interest. I always purchase a few bags of gourds and mini pumpkins at the grocery store. They last for months in trays and displays around the kitchen and dining area.

Fireplace Focus
The fireplace is the heart of coziness. Add garlands, candles, and pumpkins to frame the fireplace with flair. Even if your fireplace isn't wood-burning, a small display of stacked wood can add warmth and texture.

Table Talk: Fall Dining Delights
Fall historically has been a time to celebrate a bounteous harvest. Fall is a time to feast in style and set the table for memorable meals. Use a canvas of colors for centerpieces and tableware. Create drama by using the flicker of candlelight. Think of charcuterie boards filled with color and texture. That is the feel of autumn.

Foyer Flourish: Welcoming Fall Home
The foyer provides a first impression of your home. Add colorful branches or a pumpkin vignette to the console table for an elegant entry. A scented candle invites guests in and fills the senses. Add a soft rug and the stage is set.

Outdoor Transitions: Porch & Patio
There is something so inviting about a porch decorated for fall. It brings to imagination the aromas and comforts waiting inside. Start by adding pillows and throws to cozy up the porch swing or chairs. Add a colorful welcome mat and a wreath to the front door. Potted mums and pumpkins add instant charm and color. Bring it all together with lanterns or lighting to extend the outdoor evenings.

Conclusion
Get inspired by your environment. I decorated a little differently living in Las Vegas than I do in Washington. Consider what you can forage, how long the decor will last in the elements and what is readily available. Get the family involved by collecting pinecones and leaves. Anything that adds coziness and makes you happy in your space is a good choice. Choose what you love.
