Live in Color, While Keeping Your Neutral Walls

A well-designed living space is not just about aesthetics; it’s about crafting an environment that promotes relaxation, inspires creativity, and makes you feel genuinely at home. Your living room is the epicenter of daily life, the stage for entertaining guests, and the sanctuary for unwinding after a long day.

The Allure of Neutral Walls

Neutral walls have been the trend for almost 10 years, and for good reason. They provide a versatile backdrop that allows other elements in the room to shine. Neutral tones create a sense of calm and elegance, serving as the perfect canvas for your design prowess. Despite their understated nature, neutral walls can be the key to a cohesive and sophisticated living space.

Defining Your Style

Before diving into the nitty-gritty of design, it’s crucial to define your personal style. Are you drawn to modern minimalism, bohemian chic, or classic elegance? Your style will guide every decision, from furniture choices to decorative accents. Take the time to explore different design inspirations and pinpoint what resonates with you.

Choose an Inspiration

It could be a beautiful rug, a piece of art or a unique pillow you found. If it inspires you then you probably like the color palette too. This will be your starting point for creating a color palette that will guide most of the decisions you make for your space.

Creating A Color Palette

Every room should have four to eight colors in it's palette. Remember, this includes walls and floors. So if you want a room with a light and dark blue, if you add white walls and medium wood floors you have four colors. There are certainly eclectic rooms with more than eight colors, and it can be so fun and creative if done correctly. However, using less than four colors is only successful if you know how to creatively use textures to add lots of depth and interest. Four to eight colors is a good guideline to start.

Layers

When you add more colors, you add depth and interest to a room. If all of your throw pillows are the same color of blue, it can feel flat. Even adding pillows slightly darker or lighter in the same color can give the area more depth. Layer rugs, throws on chairs, couches, or the bottom of a bed. Throw pillows, art, plants and accessories all add a layer of interest and comfort.

Textures

Textures add depth and interest to a neutral space. Mix and match fabrics and materials to create a tactile experience. Think velvet cushions, linen throws, and wool rugs. The juxtaposition of different textures can transform a bland room into a cozy haven.

Bringing nature indoors can soften the starkness of neutral walls. Incorporate wooden elements, stone accents, and organic fabrics. These natural touches add warmth and make the space feel more inviting.

Adding Pops of Color

Neutral walls don’t mean a colorless room. Strategically add pops of color through accessories like cushions, vases, and artwork. Choose a color palette that complements the neutral tones and brings vibrancy to the space.

Using Artwork as Focal Points

Art can be a game-changer in a neutral room. Select pieces that resonate with your style and use them as focal points. Bold, colorful artwork can create a striking contrast against neutral walls, adding personality and flair.

Strategic Use of Throws and Pillows

Throws and pillows are the easiest way to add layers to your living space. Mix different textures, patterns, and colors to create a visually appealing and comfortable environment. Change them seasonally to keep the space fresh.

Layered Lighting Techniques

Lighting is crucial in setting the mood of your living space. Use a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a balanced and inviting atmosphere. Floor lamps, table lamps, and overhead fixtures should all work together harmoniously. Please, for the love of lighting, make sure all lightbulbs are the same color. If you prefer a very warm 2700k, or a white 4000k, that is your personal choice. But using different color bulbs in the same room if very disjointing. Always using the same color light bulbs is a very easy way to make your home feels cohesive.

Choosing Statement Light Fixtures

Don’t shy away from statement light fixtures. A unique chandelier or a bold pendant light can serve as a centerpiece in a neutral room, adding drama and elegance.

Putting it All Together

Start by collecting paint swatches from your local paint store, or use the free version of Canva to start saving the colors you want to use in your color palette. Once you see all the colors together, it's easy to see what might not belong or if you need to add variation. Have fun with it!
